The Grind Isn't The Answer

Here's something I've noticed after years of cycling and coaching: grinding your gears never works. Not in cycling, not in business, not in life.

Grinding is what happens when you're in the wrong gear, creating friction instead of flow. It's loud, inefficient, and eventually breaks things. Including you.

Yet this is exactly what most accomplished professionals do when they hit resistance. They push harder. Work longer. "Embrace the grind." Like somehow throwing more grit into their gears will make things run smoother.

But here's what every experienced cyclist knows: when you hit that hill that feels impossible, the answer isn't more force. It's finding the right gear. Sometimes that means shifting down to move forward. Sometimes it means getting off the bike entirely to check your equipment.

This isn't about working less. It's about working with less friction. About recognizing that sustainable performance comes from flow, not force. From precision, not pressure.

The most successful leaders I work with aren't the ones who've learned to grind harder. They're the ones who've learned to read the terrain and shift accordingly.
